Cost vs Price
A real-world PPE procurement lesson showing why the cheapest glove on paper can become the most expensive decision on site.
A large piling contractor, was reviewing supply of two high-volume PPE products: leather rigger gloves and general-purpose flat nitrile gloves.
Another distributor came in with a cheaper offer. On the surface, the products appeared similar. Datasheets were requested, comparisons were made, and despite our concerns, the lower-priced option won the business.
The Price Decision
The alternative supplier appeared cheaper for what looked like the “same” products. The decision was made on upfront purchase price.
The Red Flag
The gloves were promoted with Australian Standards claims for hand protection. In Australia, hand protection is commonly assessed using EN European glove standards.
The Lesson
PPE should not be judged by price alone. Documentation, product traceability, material quality and supplier integrity all matter.
What Happened Next
Month 0: Business Lost on Price
The customer selected the lower-cost supplier after comparing product information.
Month 2: Two Hand Injury Incidents
Two hand injury incidents occurred while workers were using the supplied gloves.
The Serious Incident
In one incident, a grinder grabbed the back of a leather rigger glove and rapidly shredded the material, causing a significant hand injury.
Closer Inspection
The nitrile gloves did not match the datasheet provided, and the rigger gloves were goat hide rather than cow hide.
Product Comparison Findings
| Item | Claim / Expectation | What Was Found | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat nitrile gloves | Product matched supplied datasheet | Different brand and different markings | Documentation did not reflect the supplied product |
| Leather rigger gloves | Comparable leather glove | Goat hide rather than cow hide | Goat hide is generally thinner and may perform differently in abrasive applications |
| Previously supplied rigger glove | Cow-hide rigger glove | Showed much greater resistance during informal comparison | Material choice can make a major difference in real-world durability |
Price is what you pay.
Cost is what you live with afterwards.
The Real Cost of Cheap PPE
Neither rigger glove was designed to be a cut-resistant glove, and neither should be relied upon as grinder protection. However, the comparison highlighted a clear difference in material performance and incidental abrasion protection.
In safety procurement, the real cost of a product includes far more than the invoice price. It includes worker safety, downtime, investigations, claims, productivity loss, compliance risk and the confidence of the people wearing the gear.
