How does a CO2 extinguisher work?
The CO2 extinguishers are a high-pressure gas cylinder filled with carbon dioxide gas. This gas is inert, which means it won’t fuel a fire by providing oxygen. All fires need oxygen to continue burning. In Class B and E fires, it displaces the oxygen from the atmosphere surrounding the fire, thereby stopping the fire by starving it of oxygen.
CO2 extinguishers are safe for use on live electrical equipment. As part of the extensive testing completed to achieve the AS/NZS1841 certification, the extinguisher has to pass a 100kV non-conductivity test. This makes it safe for the operator to discharge the extinguisher onto an electrical appliance or switchboard that is turned on.
General Information
This extinguisher type and size is one of the most common supplied in Australia. Its larger size and fire fighting effectiveness are suitable for a vast range of applications. One big advantage of using this extinguisher is that there is no residue left on any surface to clean up. This also means it can be discharged directly onto computers and other sensitive electronic equipment with no risk of damage to the item. Perfect for use in data centres, offices, shopping centres, and electrical control rooms.
Note the CO2 extinguishers are usually ineffective on Class A fires.
As with using any fire extinguisher, it is recommended to be regularly trained in their use, and important to know which fire to use.
